There is no question that the Halo series is one of the most successful video games in the history of the genre. It is a science fiction trilogy, produced by Bungie Studios. The story centers on Master Chief, who is a cybernetically-enhanced, but human protagonist who spearheads the fight against humanities alien enemy known as the Covenant.

Although it is a primary reason for the explosive success of the Xbox video game console, it first released to Mac and PC users. Originally intended to be a Real Time Shooter, it quickly evolved into the First Person Shooter we know and love today. It’s public debut occurred at MacWorld ‘99 to an incredibly excited crowd.

Microsoft was quick to pick up on the excitement behind the game, and targeted it for their upcoming console, the Xbox. By June, 2000, Microsoft had sought to purchase Bungie Studios to the sum of $50 million dollars. Bungie accepted, making Halo the key purchase available for the launch of the console.

By November 15, 2001, the Xbox was available in stores everywhere. Also available was Halo: Combat Evolved. It was a massive success both critically and in the eyes of the fans. The game sold millions of copies, making the brand new console a solid new player in the rising video game industry. Many sales records were shattered upon release, and continue to be broken. Bungie has since released two sequels and many different types of additional merchandise, including novels, comics, and toys.

A popular factor in the game’s success is the ability to battle your friends over the internet. Despite a tremendous story, it is often the multiplayer aspects that keep players coming back for more. Anyone with a broadband cable provider and an ethernet cable can connect to Xbox Live and begin exploring the amazing fun offered by a revolutionary multiplayer mode.

Most people who have bought the Xbox, or it’s successor the Xbox 360, have purchased these games for good reason. The story is outstanding, but is only part of the thrill. Deep multiplayer fun made possible through Xbox Live has sustained the series for many years. Whether you are a hardcore gamer or a casual one, there is something for everyone in these epic games.
